In Italian, the term "alla prima" means "at first attempt". In other words, the paintings are completed in a single session, on location, without further layers or refinements in the studio. Alla prima paintings tend more toward impressionistic than realistic, while the subjects are definitely recognizable.
At the end of Grasslands Road in Cataumet, looking at the north side of Lawrence Island and into Squeteague. Vaguely. Working small (5"x7") with painting knife wet paint into wet paint and trying to capture detail is a tricky adventure!
