In Italian, the term "alla prima" means "at first attempt". In other words, the paintings are completed in a single session, on location, without further layers or refinements in the studio. Alla prima paintings tend more toward impressionistic than realistic, while the subjects are definitely recognizable.
Yes, even on a grey and wet day, the atmosphere is delightful to paint. This one 5"x7". A spot I've grown fond of at the east end of the Surf Drive Beach parking lot, looking across the mouth of Falmouth Harbor to Falmouth Heights. I especially like the graceful curve of the road up to the top of the Heights - our own Falmouth Road Race version of heartbreak hill. Enjoy!
