This painting has been completed "alla prima."
In Italian, the term "alla prima" means "at first attempt". In other words, the paintings are completed in a single session, on location, without further layers or refinements in the studio. Alla prima paintings tend more toward impressionistic than realistic, while the subjects are definitely recognizable.
"How do you know when a painting is finished" is a question I hear often. This day the answer was - when the not in the forecast rain came down!!! Went into town to paint the folks at the CLOC July 4th concert - learned it was cancelled - so sat at a table and painted anyway! Kinda silly Main Street scene - challenging to paint so much detail quickly so this is truly 'impressionism'!!! A quick one hour 'Alla Prima". Happy 4th everyone!
